History

The journey of the Department of History at Saltora Netaji Centenary College (affiliated to the Burdwan University) commenced from the academic year 2000-2001 as a Pass subject with two Part-Time teachers and a handful students. At the outset, it was a herculean task for the teachers to get the students not only in History rather other departments of the College as parents of this locality were accustomed to admit their Childrens to the Colleges situated at either Bankura orRaniganj. In such a scenario, the teachers approached the local Schools and requested the Heads of the Institutions to have faith in us and promote and guide their students, who were interested in History, to be admitted in the History department. Not only that, the College arranged a meeting with the local intelligentsia and parents in this regard. These efforts gradually resulted in a good number of students registering in the subject. From the academic session 2004-2005, Honours course was introduced in History. By the time, the appointment of a full-time teacher and some part time teachers provided extra energy to the department. Very soon, the department started to arrange Remedial classes in the morning for the weaker students. It proved a boon for us. Further, the appointment of a new full-time teacher in 2008 proved a bonus for the department. Since then, the department has never seen backward. The department has the distinction of arranging some national and state level seminars with renowned historians from all parts of the country. The teachers of the department have also proved their mettle by presenting various important papers in State, National and International Seminars. Even some of them have the distinction of presenting papers in SAARC countries. The department arranges Surprise Test, Student Seminar, Quiz, Debate, publication of Wall magazine etc. for the academic enrichment of the students. Cultural activity of the department is also very rich. In the coming days, the teachers of the department wish to start Post Graduate classes here subject to the efforts of the administrators of the College. Since 2017, the College came to be affiliated to the Bankura University. At present, there are 85 students have History as Major subject, 66 students have History as Minor subject and 128 students have History as Multi-disciplinary paper under NEP, 2022.
